Glossary of Terms:

  • Speculation: The act of thinking, wondering, or guessing what the future will be like with some level of implied possibility, if not probability. 
  • Reconnection: To reform or strengthen a connection between various entities and/or ideas that once was strong but has now eroded. Most likely a natural connection that has been eroded by unnatural forces. 
  • Collaboration: working together for the greater good and benefit of all. 
  • Defamilarization: presenting common or ordinary things in an unfamiliar or strange way so they can gain new perspectives by removing previously held assumptions and misconceptions. 
  • Critical Design: uses design fiction and speculative design proposals to challenge assumptions and conceptions about the role objects play in everyday life.
  • Defamiliar Design: uses speculative design to present common or ordinary things in a way that makes it unfamiliar and allows the audience to interact with this design, thus playing themselves in the defamiliarized world.
